The short answer

A general contractor in Hamilton plans the work, pulls the permits, hires and sequences the trades, and answers for the result. Jopie Construction Group does this with a written schedule and fixed scope, and our in-house crew self-performs framing, drywall, tile and paint so fewer handoffs can slip.

Hiring a general contractor means handing your project to one company that owns the outcome. Jopie Construction Group plans the work, runs the schedule and budget, coordinates and self-performs the trades, and delivers a finished result on residential and commercial projects across Hamilton, Halton, Peel and Niagara. What sets us apart is the management behind the build: our projects are planned and run by one team, with scheduling, budgeting and trade coordination handled from day one.

What's included

Single point of accountability

One contract, one team, one company responsible from start to finish.

Professional project management

Structured planning, scheduling and budget control on every job.

Self-performing crew

We do much of the work in-house — drywall, painting, tiling and more — not just subcontract.

Trade coordination

Vetted trades sequenced properly so the project doesn't stall.

Permits & inspections

We handle the paperwork and coordinate approvals.

Transparent budgeting

Clear estimates and cost control, with no surprise change orders.

What determines the cost of a general contracting project in Hamilton?

Two houses with the same square footage can price very differently. These are the variables that move the number, roughly in order of impact:

Structural scope

Moving or removing load-bearing walls, new openings, underpinning or an addition adds engineering, steel or LVL, and inspections. Cosmetic work does not.

Age and condition

Pre-1960 Hamilton homes often hide knob-and-tube wiring, plaster-and-lath, galvanized supply lines and uneven framing. We price a contingency for what the walls will show.

Permits and approvals

Building permit, zoning, heritage or conservation review. These add weeks, not just fees. Missing drawings are the usual cause of delay.

Material selection

Cabinetry, stone, tile format, plumbing fixtures and windows can double or halve the finish budget on the same layout.

Access and site logistics

Narrow lots in Kirkendall, no rear lane, no parking or a third-floor walk-up change labour hours and waste removal.

Schedule pressure

Compressed timelines and after-hours work in occupied buildings cost more than a normal sequence.

How we work

Consultation & estimate

We review your project, scope it, and give a clear written quote.

Plan & schedule

A realistic timeline, budget and trade plan before work starts.

Build & manage

We run the site day to day and keep you updated throughout.

Hand-over

Final walkthrough, punch list cleared, and the project signed off.

How we scope a general contracting job

Every project starts with a site walkthrough, then a written scope, schedule and price. If the scope changes mid-build, we write the change order before the work happens, so there is no surprise at the end. See our 2026 renovation cost guide for current ranges.

Why Jopie

Most contractors can swing a hammer; far fewer can run a project. We bring large-scale project-management discipline to renovations and builds, so the schedule, budget and trades are planned up front and tracked through the job.

Common questions

Questions homeowners and owners ask

What does a general contractor in Hamilton actually do day to day?

A general contractor is the single party responsible for delivering a project. In practice that means:

  • Defining scope and getting a written price.
  • Applying for permits through the City of Hamilton and booking inspections.
  • Sequencing trades so framing, mechanical, drywall, tile and paint do not collide.
  • Ordering long-lead materials early.
  • Managing quality, safety, insurance and WSIB paperwork.
How do I know if a Hamilton general contractor is properly insured?

Ask for a certificate of insurance and a WSIB clearance certificate, and confirm both are current. Jopie carries $2M liability insurance and WSIB coverage and sends both certificates with the quote on request.

Do I need a general contractor, or can I hire trades myself?

If the job is one trade (painting, tile, drywall), hiring that trade directly is usually cheaper. Once the job involves three or more trades, permits, or any structural change, a general contractor earns their fee by preventing rework and schedule gaps.

Do you handle both residential and commercial projects?

Yes. Residential work is concentrated in Hamilton, Halton, Peel and Niagara. Commercial fit-outs and project management extend across the wider GTA.

Why does the same renovation get such different quotes?

Usually because the quotes cover different scopes. One may exclude permits, demolition, disposal, electrical, or an allowance for hidden conditions. Ask each contractor to price the same written scope, and ask what is excluded.
