Jopie Construction Group is a painting contractor in Hamilton, Ontario. How we prep: the part of the job you don't see
Prep is what separates a real painter from a cheap one, and it is the part you cannot see once the paint is on. Here is exactly what happens before and during every job.
- Surface repair. Holes, cracks, dents and failed caulking are repaired. Water damage is fixed at the source and stains are sealed.
- Sanding. Walls, patches, trim and glossy surfaces are sanded so new paint bonds and the finish is smooth.
- Priming. Stains, bare patches, repairs and big colour changes get primer so the finish coats cover evenly.
- Masking and protection. Floors, furniture and fixtures are covered; hardware comes off; glass and trim are taped where needed.
- Cut lines. Edges at ceilings, trim and colour changes are cut by hand for crisp, straight lines.
- Cleanup. Tape and coverings come off, the work area is cleaned, and we walk it with you and touch up before we leave.

How long does painting take?
A single room takes about a day. A typical 1,500–2,500 sq ft whole-home repaint takes 4–8 working days with a crew. Exteriors take 4–10 working days, weather permitting. Commercial work is phased around your hours, so we agree the schedule at the walkthrough.
What can go wrong with a paint job — and how we prevent it
- Peeling and blistering. Almost always caused by poor prep or painting over damp or dusty surfaces. We clean, sand and prime before any finish coat.
- Stains bleeding through. Water stains, smoke and marker reappear through ordinary paint. We seal them with a stain-blocking primer first.
- Patchy sheen and roller marks. Unprimed repairs show as dull patches (flashing). We prime repairs and keep a wet edge on every wall.
- Colour that looks different at home. Paint looks different in your light. We use sample patches so you approve colour on your wall before we start.
- Lead paint in older homes. Homes built before the 1970s may have lead paint on older trim and siding. We use safe practices — containment and wet methods — rather than dry sanding.
- Weather ruining an exterior job. Paint applied in the wrong temperature or damp fails early. We schedule around the forecast and surface moisture.

Do you move furniture?
We move and cover furniture within reach of the walls and protect floors with drop sheets. Please clear fragile items and very heavy pieces. If you would rather we handle everything, tell us at the walkthrough and it goes into the quote.
What paint brands do you use?
We use contractor-grade, low-VOC lines from major manufacturers such as Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams, and can match your preference. The brand, product line and sheen are written into your quote.
Can we live in the house during the work?
Yes. We work room by room, keep pathways and bathrooms usable and use low-odour, low-VOC products on request. Tell us about pets, allergies or anyone working from home and we will plan around it.
How many coats of paint do you apply?
Two finish coats over properly primed surfaces is our standard. Big colour changes, stains and new drywall need a primer coat first, and dark-to-light changes can need an extra coat.
Do you paint ceilings?
Yes. We repair cracks and stains, then paint ceilings in an ultra-flat finish. We can also remove popcorn texture after testing. See our ceiling painting page.
Can you fix water stains and cracks before painting?
Yes. We repair cracks, holes and water-damaged drywall first and seal stains with a stain-blocking primer. If a stain comes from an active leak, the leak must be fixed first and we will tell you honestly.
